For the Heat, now or never.
After losing at home twice in a row, Miami is now facing a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals against Denver. The Heat will fall agonizingly short of a title if they don’t win their next three games in a row.
But, just like the rest of their amazing playoffs, they aren’t ready to give up yet.
“There’s no question. After losing Game 4, star forward Jimmy Butler said, “We don’t have any of that.” “We don’t have no quit. From tomorrow on, we’re going to keep fighting to get better. Then, on Monday, we will do what we said we would do all along and win.
“We’ve got to. We can’t do anything else. If not, we did all this for nothing.”
It’s not the first time in the playoffs that the Heat have had their backs against the wall.
In the Play-In Tournament, they had to fight against the Bulls in the second half to keep from not making the playoffs at all. Then, in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, they went on the road and beat the second-seeded Celtics. Even though they had lost three games in a row and were up 3-0 in the series, they won that game.
This team is at its best when everyone else has given up on them.
After Friday night’s loss, head coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters, “We’ve done everything the hard way, and that’s how it’s going to have to be done right now, again.” “We’ll only worry about getting this thing back to the 305. If you send this back to Miami, things could change quickly.
“It’s going to be a tough game in Denver, but the competitors in our locker room are up for it. By the time we get on that plane, all we can think about is getting this thing back to Miami.”
Only 13 teams have won an NBA Playoff series after falling behind 3-1. Only one of them happened in the NBA Finals. LeBron James and the Cavaliers beat the Warriors in 2016 to win their first title as a team.
But Butler thinks the Heat have everything they need to become the second-best team.
“We do believe in one another and ourselves as individuals,” he said. “We’ve been through many hard things this year, including this playoff run. And now it’s even harder than before. But, as we always say, what you want is on the other side of the difficult. So, this is where we are. That’s how things are, so we have to go out and win three in a row.”
The amazing run of Miami is finally coming to an end. But after what we’ve seen in this year’s playoffs, you should be careful about writing off the Heat.
Monday, 12 June, at 8:30 p.m., Game 5 will start in Denver.
